noms: matcha soft serve at matcha matcha

March 22, 2017

So far, my LA trip has been great. I’ve been eating and exploring lots especially in the San Gabriel Valley area. Sometimes trying to find new places can be difficult in an area as large as LA county. I definitely still have lots to try but first, let’s talk about Matcha Matcha. Matcha Matcha is located in the Westfield Santa Anita Mall in Arcadia, California. It specializes in matcha flavored goodies, specifically soft serve, drinks and cookies.

Matcha Matcha is the first of its kind that I’ve seen in LA. The soft serve models after soft serves based in Taiwan (that I’ve seen anyway). It is somewhat tucked away in the promenade/outdoor section of the mall.

The EATS section, as they call it, has a very green feel.

There it is. It’s a small little stand with a see through section in the back where you can see them make your ice creams for you.

I didn’t end up ordering any drinks, just the soft serve. Matcha lattes can’t differ too much in their taste anyway.

I got the hokkaido milk and matcha swirl with red beans, white mochi and matcha cake for the toppings.

The breakdown:

Hokkaido milk soft serve: 3/5
Matcha soft serve: 4/5
Red beans: 5/5
White mochi: 5/5
Matcha cake: 4/5

I love red bean so I don’t think you could get this wrong (reasons for the 5/5). The highlight of the cup was definitely the white mochi. Unlike traditional dry mochi, the mochi that Matcha Matcha uses is the one that is typically eaten in Asian soupy desserts, so the texture is amazingly chewy. I’d love to eat a bowl of just that. The soft serves overall were a tad bit too sweet and became overwhelming very quickly. The toppings do well to offset that but the ratio of ice cream to topping is too high.

My mom got the same soft serve swirl but with red bean and the matcha cookie crumble topping.

The breakdown:

Matcha cookie crumble: 3/5

The cookie was really underwhelming.

So now the question is, would I go back? Since there is no current replacement/similar concept to Matcha Matcha in the SGV, I would go back. There are definitely things I’d want them to work on however.

It also makes for a really pretty instagram picture, so why not? 🙂

Overall review: 4/5

lots of love,
ev
